They turned left.
They turned right.
They drove straight.
They turned left onto Garden Avenue.
They drove down, down, downward, all the way into the mouth of Hell.
They took a wrong turn and drove through a creepy upper-class suburb, another one of those neighborhoods that clearly wanted to be a gated community. Alice could see Joseph fidgeting, looking through the windows, wondering if people were looking at him.
They turned right.
They turned right.
They turned right.
They turned right and they turned right and they turned right and they turned right.
“We’re driving in a circle,” Alice protested.
“No we’re not!”
“Look at the map, here…” She took it out and began tracing it with her finger. “We turned right here, then we turned right…”
“I’ve got it under control. Stop worrying.”
